Organising Product Camp Singapore opened up a world of opportunities to meet the best in class people from the product management fraternity in Singapore and beyond. My calendar these days is full with lunch meetings with some of the amazing people I met in Product Camp Singapore.

Robert Huber is one of the passionate product management practitioner, who brings in a wealth of knowledge through his experience and study. He is well known in the product management fraternity globally and is also one of the founding members of the International Software Product Management Association (ISPMA).

He is also the contributing member of the SPM Book of Knowledge (SPMBOK). The figure below shows a snapshot of its framework.

When Robert and I began discussing about the various standards and frameworks in Product Management, Robert acknowledged that the industry hasn’t been able to arrive at a consensus to come up with a standard framework/methodology globally.

Unlike Project Management, which formed a global standard under the Project Management Institute (PMI), Product Management is still grappling with competing frameworks and methodologies, that are equally competent but applicable in different context and scenarios. As a result, there are competing certifications and training programs all over the world that follow different methodologies and frameworks. I took this opportunity to research on this and find out all the various frameworks/methodologies available in the industry today.

I would like to  provide an overview of these frameworks and methodologies. One must use their discretion to decide upon the one you want to accept.

Steven Haines’ Product Management Desk Reference

Steven Haines’ Product Management Desk Reference is quite influential in the industry. I personally find his tome an exhaustive treatise on Product Management. I refer to the reference for my day to day PM needs.

His influence is evident with the fact that he was awarded the Most Influential Product Management Professional by Product Management Festival in 2013.
